Editing Got Easier with a New, More Intuitive Selection Flow

Designers can now quickly switch between selector tools to focus edits exactly where needed

Precision matters when it comes to editing the right part of an image. Whether creating logos, characters or social post — every use case calls for the right tool. Previously, selecting and editing parts of an image required jumping between separate tools. With the new Selection Panel, designers can now quickly switch between the lasso, brush, or area selectors or use our new wand to automatically select portions with AI. Edits can be focused exactly where they’re needed.

Imagine a designer updating the logo on a packaging design or fine-tuning a character illustration for a game UI. With the new Selection Panel from the top toolbar, they can quickly isolate just the logo using a brush — perfect for soft edges — or have AI precisely select the intricate edges of the character’s outfit using the wand tool. From there, the designer can inpaint the selections with a prompt or generate a fill for the selection with the help of AI — all without switching tools.

Recraft’s updated Selection Panel combines everything needed to select and edit an image into a single location, streamlining the editing experience to be faster and more intuitive.

How It Works

  1. After generating or uploading an image, click the Select button in the top bar.

  2. Make a selection using the Selection Panel. Choose from one of four methods (Lasso, Brush, Area or Wand) to define the selection area or mask.

  3. Make a negative selection by holding Option or Alt to subtract from the selection. This method is perfect for cleaning up edges or carving out complex shapes.

  4. When a selection is made, creators can Erase their selection from the image, which removes elements and AI generates the appropriate filling for the area. The Scissors option clears selected areas fully to a transparent background. (This is currently available for raster images only and does not apply to vector shapes.)

  5. Once a selection mask is active, the Modify Area panel appears below, ready to insert something entirely new from a prompt.

  6. Once modifications are complete, click outside the image or use Esc to Clear Selection.

With the redesigned Selection Panel, all core editing actions are now available in one place. Switching between tools is seamless; selections are editable. Whether it’s quick clean-up, inpainting, or experimental editing, the new flow brings flexibility and control to every step.

So go ahead — draw outside the lines, then refine them.
